چکیده

In this paper we explore the application of cryogenic imaging spectrophotome-ters. Prototypes of this new class of detector, such as superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) and transition edge sensors (TESs), currently deliver low resolution imaging spectrophotometry with high quantum efficiency (70–100%) and no read noise over a wide bandpass in the visible to near-infrared. In order to demonstrate their utility and the differences in observing strategy needed to maximize their scientific return, we present simulated observations of a deep ex-tragalactic field. Using a simple analytic technique, we can estimate both the galaxy redshift and spectral type more accurately than is possible with current broadband techniques. From our simulated observations and a subsequent discussion of the expected migration path for this new technology, we illustrate the power and promise of these devices.

First Astronomical Application of a Cryogenic TES Spectrophotometer

We report on the first astronomical observations with a photon counting pixel detector that provides arrival time-(δt = 100ns) and energy-(δE γ ≤ 0.15 eV) resolved measurements from the near IR through the near UV. Our test observations were performed by coupling this Transition Edge Sensor (TES) device to a 0.6m telescope; we have obtained the first simultaneous optical near-IR phase-resolved ...

SPIFI: a direct-detection imaging spectrometer for submillimeter wavelengths.

The South Pole Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer (SPIFI) is the first instrument of its kind-a direct-detection imaging spectrometer for astronomy in the submillimeter band. SPIFI's focal plane is a square array of 25 silicon bolometers cooled to 60 mK; the spectrometer consists of two cryogenic scanning Fabry-Perot interferometers in series with a 60-mK bandpass filter. The instrument operate...

Phase-resolved Crab Studies with a Cryogenic TES Spectrophotometer

We are developing timeand energy-resolved near-IR/optical/UV photon detectors based on sharp superconducting-normal transition edges in thin films. We report observations of the Crab pulsar made during prototype testing at the McDonald 2.7m telescope with a fiber-coupled transition-edge sensor (TES) system. These data show substantial (δα ∼ 0.3), rapid variations in the spectral index through t...

Pmas, the Potsdam Multi-aperture Spectrophotometer I. Design, Manufacture, and Performance

We describe the design, manufacture, commissioning, and performance of PMAS, the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer. PMAS is a dedicated integral field spectrophotometer, optimized to cover the optical wavelength regime of 0.35–1 μm. It is based on the lens array – fiber bundle principle of operation. The instrument employs an all-refractive fiber spectrograph, built with CaF2 optics, to ...

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (ciber): a Sounding Rocket Payload to Study the near Infrared Extragalactic Background Light

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) is a suite of four instruments designed to study the near infrared (IR) background light from above the Earth’s atmosphere. The instrument package comprises two imaging telescopes designed to characterize spatial anisotropy in the extragalactic IR background caused by cosmological structure during the epoch of reionization, a low resolution spec...
